Monte Vista High School and 4x4

WHAT IS A 4X4 SCHEDULE?

A 4 x 4 block schedule offers four 90-minute classes per day. Each class is the equivalent of a traditional two semester/year-long class and students earn two final grades per class each term. Students may take three or four courses per semester and can earn up to 80 credits per year.

Why is the MV Faculty Considering this Change?

  • Unfunded 7th Period

    • Monte Vista is funded for students taking six classes

    • We currently offer 37 A period classes

    • Over 40% of our students take an A period course

    • Most of these students are taking seven classes

    • That seventh course is often an elective that a student would not be able to take if that extra time was not available

  • Class Size

    • Class sizes average 32:1 across academic courses

    • Many class sections are larger - 35+: 1

  • Total Student / Teacher Contacts

    • MV Teachers see an average of 160 students per day

    • Many teachers see between 160 and 180 per day

  • Prep Time

    • MV teachers have 54 minutes per day to prep their classes

  • Opportunities for Advancement and Remediation in the School Day

    • A student who wishes to advance must take a non-district course or summer school

    • A student who needs to remediate must take a non-district course, summer school, or wait until the next school year to re-take the course

    • All students do not have an equitable access to advancement or remediation courses off campus

  • Equitable Access

    • Not all MV students have access to our current A period due to a variety of factors

    • Not all MV students have access to Advancement or Remediation courses due to a number of factors

How does a 4 x 4 Schedule Meet These Concerns?

  • Unfunded 7th Period

    • The school day begins at 8:30 and ends at 3:10 for all students

    • Students can take up to eight courses per year within the school day

    • Allows students full access to electives during the school day

  • Class Size

    • Class sizes will stabilize based upon teacher course load requirements

  • Total Student / Teacher Contacts

    • MV Teachers would see about 100 students per day

  • Prep Time

    • MV teachers would have 80 -90 minutes per day to prep their classes

  • Opportunities for Advancement and Remediation in the School Day

    • A student who wishes to advance may take a course during the school day, a non-district course or summer school

    • A student who needs to remediate may take a course during the next semester, a non-district course, or summer school.

    • All students would have equitable access to advancement or remediation

  • Equitable Access

    • All students have access to eight class periods per year

    • All students have access to advancement and remediation courses within the school day

Challenges to Our Current Mindsets

  • One Semester = One Year will Mean Changes in Content and Instruction

    • A more focused view on what standards and skills every student needs to demonstrate mastery in each course

    • A change in teaching practice that places more emphasis on depth of knowledge and less on covering content

Process

  • Faculty Research and Decision

    • The MV Faculty will research the 4 x 4 schedule and assess whether it is a good fit for Monte Vista

    • The research will include visits to other high schools using the 4 x 4 schedule

    • The MV Faculty will vote in early February whether to move forward with the 4 x 4 schedule

    • If the MV Faculty votes to reject the new schedule, we will continue with the current 7-period schedule

    • If the MV faculty votes to approve the new schedule, they will also vote whether to implement it in the 2019-20 0r 2020-21 school years.

  • Student Outreach

    • There have already been two lunch time forums for students

    • There will be more forums in January as we learn more about the 4 x 4 schedule

  • Parent / Community Outreach

    • There is an evening parent forum scheduled for January 16th at 6:00 in the Monte Vista Theater.
