Course Selections

Counselors will only be making schedule changes for the following reasons below and only at registration on Wednesday August 9th.

  1. Hole in schedule (e.g. missing 5th period)
  2. Senior Missing Graduation Requirement
  3. Remediation of class over the summer
  4. Advancement of class over the summer (must provide official transcript to registrar & pass assessment test if necessary)

If you are requesting a change as you qualify for one of the above changes, please attend registration on Wednesday August 9th. We will do our best to accommodate course changes based on space availability.


****Please note that counselors will NOT be making schedule changes via email correspondence or as a drop in to the counseling office or for individual meetings. Additionally, requests for specific teacher or period preferences will not be considered.  At this time we are finalizing the Master Schedule for the 2017-2018 school year and meeting with families new to our school district.

Course Scheduling

Welcome to the 2017-2018 School Year!  The Monte Vista Counseling Department wants to keep you informed of our schedule so that you can make the best decisions regarding your high school academic plan. 

During the month of March the Counselors will meet with current students to discuss Course Scheduling for the 2017-2018 School Year.  We encourage parents to attend the Parent Information Meeting on February 8th, where our Monte Vista Counselors will present an overview of transcripts, graduation requirements, Naviance for vocational/college planning and have a Question & Answer session.  

Due to the high volume of requests for Counselors to meet with students, parent appointments will not be available during the months of February and March. Students, please sign up early if you need to see us to create an academic plan for next year.

Important Dates:

February 23rd Course Selection Forms will be distributed to current 9th, 10th, and 11th graders.

February 8th Current 9th, 10th, 11th Grade Parent Night-6:00pm in the Al Gentile Theatre. AP Night will be at 5:00pm earlier in the evening.

March 1st-8th On Line Scheduling will be open to current 9th, 10th, and 11th graders to complete their 2017-2018 Course Selections. Please meet with your counselor if you need advice or help requesting classes.

March 9th Current 9th, 10th, and 11th Graders – Submit parent signed Course Selection Form and parent signed print out of the online course list to English class.


Course Planning:

The District Course Catalog provides you with course descriptions for Monte Vista High School course offerings as well as university designations for college admission requirements.  For example:  Art 1, Theater Arts 1, Orchestra, and Women’s Ensemble are all designated as Performing Fine Arts courses for college admission and Fine Art credit for graduation requirements whereas Culinary Arts 1 is a Vocational/Applied Art and not accepted for college admission requirements, but counts for high school graduation.

  1. Review the back of the Course Selection Form for classes available at your grade level.

On Line Scheduling:

  1.  Your username is:  mv.firstinitiallastname   (ex for John Smith is jsmith)
  2. Your password is:  ID#XXXXXX (unless you have changed it already)
  3. To access the Student Portal, click here: (Opens March 1st)
  4. Change your password on the first login:   It should be something secure. 6 to 8 characters in length. It should not spell anything, and it must contain letters, numbers, and special characters.
  5. Remember to complete the Course Selection Form and print out your online course list.  Have your parents sign both documents.  If both forms are not signed, they are not accepted.  Return the forms to your English teacher on March 9th.  If you miss the March 9th collection in English please bring your form to the Counseling Office as soon as possible.
  6. Helpful hints
    1. Search by course name
    2. Do not use computer with Windows 8 as some students experienced issues in the past.
    3. If having trouble, try another computer. If it continues, come into the counseling office.
    4. Scroll to bottom of screen to find “Request this Course” tab.
    5. Remember to include Alternate Courses in your forms!

Remember that completing your Course Selection Form in a timely manner means that you have the best chance to have courses available to you.
